If something is happening right now, stop reading and call your local emergency number. Nothing here should delay an evacuation order, or delay an instruction from the services responding where you live. This site is written to be read in a quiet week, in advance. It is not written for anyone who is in the middle of an incident, and it is not a substitute for the people whose job that is.
General information, and only that
Everything on holdoutdays.com is general educational information about leaving home at short notice, written for a general audience. It does not take account of your home, your health, your household, your region or your legal obligations, because it cannot know them.
Nothing here is professional, medical, legal or insurance advice, and nothing here is advice about your particular case. Reading this site creates no professional or advisory relationship of any kind.
What we are not
Hold Out Days is an independent publication. We are not an emergency service, a fire or police department, a civil protection authority, an insurer, a medical provider or a licensed adviser. We have no authority to issue instructions about your area, no access to information about what is happening where you live, and no role in any official response. Where guidance from an authority, a utility, an insurer or a qualified professional differs from anything written here, theirs applies and ours does not.
Circumstances differ, and that matters
Homes differ in construction, heating, electrical installation, plumbing and local regulation. People differ in health, mobility, medication, age and responsibility for others. Regions differ in climate, hazards, infrastructure and law. A general article cannot account for those differences and this site does not pretend to. Judging what is appropriate, safe and lawful for you remains yours to do.
No promised outcome
Leaving early and leaving organised reduce risk; they do not remove it. Nothing on this site promises safety, protection, a result, or that any particular event will go well. We do not publish guarantees, and any reading of our text as a guarantee is a misreading.
Safety matters that deserve specific caution
- Carbon monoxide. Any appliance that burns fuel produces carbon monoxide, which cannot be seen or smelled. Never run a generator, camping stove, grill, heater or similar device indoors, in a garage, or near a window, door or air intake. Health authorities consistently warn that carbon monoxide causes deaths.
- Gas, water and electricity supplies. Whether a supply should be shut off, and how, depends on the incident, on your installation and on local rules, and restoring some supplies is work for a qualified person. Follow the instruction you are given. Work on an electrical or gas installation requires a qualified trade and compliance with local regulation.
- Water on roads. Depth and current cannot be judged reliably from a vehicle. Emergency services advise against driving into standing or moving water, and so do we.
- Medication and health. Decisions about medicines, doses, supplies, medical devices and existing conditions belong with a pharmacist or doctor who knows the person concerned. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and nothing here should be used to change, delay or stop a treatment.
- Fire. Do not re-enter a building you have left because of fire, smoke or a suspected gas leak. Official fire safety guidance is consistent on this point.
Accuracy and currency
Pages are reviewed periodically and carry a review date. Official guidance changes, products change, and an article that was accurate when written can age. We make no warranty that any page is complete or current, and we would rather be told than not: if something here looks wrong or out of date, write to [email protected] with the detail and we will review it. The Editorial Policy explains how corrections are handled.
Other websites and commercial links
This site links to material published by other organisations, and some links are commercial. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for what they publish or sell, and a link is not an endorsement of everything behind it. The Advertising Policy explains the commercial side, and the Terms of Use set out the legal position.
